The war ends.
The memories don’t.
And somehow, nobody gives you a manual.
Laughing in the Dark. Healing in the Light is a real, relatable, sometimes funny, and painful story about what happens after military service. When PTSD shows up, relationships get tense, faith gets questioned, and the words “I’m fine” become your favorite lie.
Comedian and speaker Vernard “The Laugh Therapist” Hines shares his journey through war, trauma, marriage struggles, therapy, prayer, and learning how to laugh again without pretending the pain didn’t exist.
He wrote this book for:
-
Veterans who joke to avoid talking
-
Spouses who are trying to understand the distance
-
Anyone tired of being strong all the time
No clichés.
No fake motivation.
Just truth, hope, and well-timed punchlines. Because healing doesn’t mean you stop hurting it means you stop hiding.
And sometimes, the first real sign you’re healing is that you can finally laugh again.

Vernard your book is very well written, engaging and a quick and easy ready! Very transparent and helps you understand and identify with you! I feel like I saw some “other folks” in this book as well! This book will and can minister to hundreds of people. I pray the book gets the exposure it deserves and not only helps thousands of people heal and identify but makes you millions! For real…it’s THAT good!

Vernard , thank you so much for the book. I am on chapter six. I misspoke the page number when I saw you.
You have taught me a lot about PTSD, Trish, your life, and children. You are alive today because of a divine intervention through various ways. This is a very busy semester for me, but I could not put down your book. I’m sending this note before I turn to work.

After Reading the book laughing in the dark, healing in the light.
There are two things I gleaned from this easy read book. First, you need to seek help ( Comedy, God, therapy etc.) Secondly, open up to a spouse or friend that will love you through your (PTSD) pain.
I truly enjoyed the book and already shared it with multiple friends and church members.
